Odds are probabilities in disguise

Every price is a probability written in another notation. Decimal odds of 9.00 are claiming an 11.11 per cent chance, because one divided by nine is 0.1111. The same price is +800 in American and 8/1 fractional. Three notations, one number.

Converting between them matters because golf coverage mixes them freely: American books quote +800, European books quote 9.00, British ones quote 8/1, and comparing two prices in different notations by eye is where mistakes happen. The converter above exists to remove that step rather than to teach the formula.

The formula is worth knowing anyway, because it makes the fourth field the useful one. Implied probability turns a price into a claim you can disagree with. A player at 9.00 is being offered as roughly a one-in-nine shot; whether that is generous depends on whether you think their real chance is better or worse than one in nine, and that is a judgement about golf rather than about arithmetic.

American odds carry one quirk worth stating. Above evens they are the profit on a 100 stake, so +800 returns 800 profit on 100. Below evens they invert: the number is the stake required to win 100, so −150 means staking 150 to win 100. The sign is doing real work, and dropping it turns one price into a different one.

Why dead heats matter more in golf

In most sports a tie for a paying position is unusual. In golf it is close to guaranteed, because scores are integers and the field is large: several players finishing on the same total is the expected outcome rather than a coincidence, and first-round-leader markets produce ties almost every week.

The settlement rule is unintuitive the first time it is met. If three players tie for the last two paying places, the stake is not paid in full and not voided: it is divided by the number of players tied, and the resulting fraction is settled at the full odds. Two thirds of the stake wins; one third is lost. The calculator above shows both figures side by side because the difference between them is the part people do not expect.

The practical consequence is that a quoted place price systematically overstates the return. If a market pays five places and ties are common, the expected settlement is below the headline number, and by an amount that grows with the size of the tie. A price compared without the dead-heat rule in mind is not being compared correctly.

There is one case where the rule works the other way. If fewer players tie than there are places left to fill, every tied player is paid in full, because the fraction is capped at one. The calculator handles that case rather than assuming a tie is always a reduction.

Reading the margin across a field

Convert every price in a field to its implied probability and add them up. The total will not be 100 per cent: it will be higher, and the excess is the operator's margin. That single calculation says more about a market than any individual price does.

Golf is where this is hardest to see, and the reason is arithmetic rather than concealment. In a two-outcome market the margin has two prices to hide in and shows up as an obvious gap. Spread across a hundred and forty runners it is thin enough that every price looks defensible, and the longest shots absorb most of it: a player quoted at 500/1 whose real chance is nearer one in twelve hundred costs an individual bettor nothing visible.

One caution about using the last calculator. Paste a partial field and the total will come out under 100 per cent, because the players you left out still carry probability. That is not a favourable market; it is an incomplete list, and the tool says so rather than reporting a negative margin as though it were a finding.

Three worked examples

The arithmetic is short enough to follow by hand, and following it once makes the calculators readable rather than magic.

An outright at +800. A positive American price is the profit on a hundred, so +800 pays 800 on a 100 stake and returns 900 in total. As a decimal that is 900 divided by 100, or 9.00. The implied probability is one divided by 9.00, which is 11.11 per cent, so the price is calling this player roughly a one-in-nine chance. A ten-unit stake therefore returns 90, of which 80 is profit.

An each-way at 26.00, paying a quarter. A twenty-unit each-way bet is two ten-unit bets, not one twenty-unit bet, and that is the part most often misread. The win half pays 10 × 26.00 = 260. The place half settles at a quarter of the odds, which means a quarter of the 25 units of profit plus the stake back: 25 × 0.25 + 1 = 7.25, so 10 × 7.25 = 72.50. Win outright and both halves pay, for 332.50. Place without winning and only the second half pays, for 72.50, a return on a twenty-unit outlay that is comfortably profitable but nothing like the headline price suggests.

A dead heat for the last two of five places. Ten units at 5.00 would return 50 clean. If three players tie for two remaining places, the stake is divided by the three tied players and two of those thirds are settled: 10 × two-thirds × 5.00 = 33.33. The tie costs 16.67, which is a third of the return and considerably more than most readers expect from a result that still counts as a win. Change the tie to two players for two places and the fraction caps at one: everyone is paid in full and the return is the clean 50.

The pattern across all three is the same: the headline price is the least consequential number. The place terms, the number of paying positions and the likelihood of a tie decide what a bet actually returns, and all three are printed in the rules rather than in the odds.

What the conversion does not tell you

Every number on this page is arithmetic performed on a price somebody else set. That is worth stating plainly, because an implied probability looks like a forecast and is not one. It is the operator's price restated as a percentage, margin included. If a player converts to eleven per cent, the honest reading is "this market is priced as though the chance were about eleven per cent, before the margin is taken out", not "this player has an eleven per cent chance".

Two further limits are worth carrying away from a calculator. The first is that a conversion is a snapshot: golf prices move on withdrawals, weather and the first two rounds, so a figure worked out on Tuesday describes Tuesday. The second is that the settlement rules modelled here are the common ones. Dead-heat division and the number of places paid each way are set by the operator, not by the sport, and they differ between operators and sometimes between events at the same operator. Common questions

How do I convert golf odds to a probability?

Divide 100 by the decimal odds. Decimal 9.00 gives 11.11 per cent. From American odds, a positive price converts as 100 divided by the price plus 100; a negative one as its absolute value divided by that value plus 100.

What does a dead heat do to my return?

It reduces it. The stake is divided by the number of players tied and settled at full odds on that fraction; the remainder is lost. Three players tying for two places settles two thirds of the stake. If fewer players tie than there are places left, everyone is paid in full.

How does each-way work on golf?

Half the stake goes on the outright win and half on a place inside a stated bracket, settled at a fraction of the odds, commonly a quarter or a fifth. Winning outright pays both halves; placing pays only the second. The place fraction and the number of places are the terms that decide the value.

Why is the golf favourite priced so long?

Because they are competing against a hundred and thirty-nine other players rather than one. A favourite at 8/1 is being offered as an 11 per cent chance, which for a tournament field is a strong position rather than a weak one.
